Billy Holiday in Chanel No. 5 TV commercial.

Yesterday I saw the fantastic Chanel No.5 commercial on Dutch television with music by Billy Holiday with the classic “I’m a fool to want you”. The song has been written in the early fifties by conductor Joe Herron, a friend of Sinatra and lyricist Jack Wolf. As Sinatra changed part of the lyrics he was added as a co-writer of this great song. Lady Day recorded the song in 1958 on her last album Lady in Satin” with a 40 piece orchestra conducted and arranged  by Ray Ellis who said: ” I would say that the most emotional moment was her listening to the playback of “I’m a Fool to Want You.” There were tears in her eyes … After we finished the album I went into the control room and listened to all the takes. I must admit I was unhappy with her performance, but I was just listening musically instead of emotionally. It wasn’t until I heard the final mix a few weeks later that I realized how great her performance really was”.
